| After yesterday’s defeat against Belgium, Switzerland celebrated it’s first victory pushing aside with unsuspected authority the spanish team (3:0). A success that enables Olga Skhurnova’s girls to hope for a qualification for the semi-finals. But that can only be with a victory over Italy… Against Spain, the setter Laura Sirucek showed the pace and with her partners leaded throughout the match, leading 10 to 4 after the first balls. The swiss team kept it’s head in an incredible end of second set and then made up their only poor start in the third (0:4) to finally break through with a 6:0 period from 18:16 to 24:16 ! Darja Sataric (from Köniz) and Inès Granvorka (from Cossonay) were often at their best on their spikes.
Switzerland : Tanja Goricanec, Laura Sirucek, Ines Granvorka, Darija Sataric, Joana Winter, Marina Kühner; Nadine Jenny, Livia Caluori. |

The swiss team starts it’s Tournament loosing to Belgium, in three strait sets. The players of the coach Olga Skhurnov nevertheless can be praised for the resistance given to a belgian team whose physical power was the key to the game. For 88 minutes, the swiss girls were at the level of their opponent – or nearly, since in each set they finally just missed overcoming the last balls. Their worst regrets can be for the first set, lost 27 to 29 and having spoiled two set balls ! Cruising in defense and often very impressive on the edge of the net, thanks to Ines Granvorka and Tanja Goricanec, without forgetting the work from setter Laura Sirucek, the swiss team leaded once again the game 22 to 21 in the second set before bending down.
Switzerland : Tanja Goricanec , Joana Winter, Karin Wesseling, Darija Sataric, Ines Granvorka, Laura Sirucek; Sarina Schafflützel, Marina Kühner. |

| Germany pulled off full speed in the tournament to topple a poor french side in three strait sets. The physical power of the german athletes, amongst others of Sarah Petrausch (186 cm and 83 kilograms), who bore some holes in the floor at Queue d’Arve… Despite all their good will, the french could only bend under the strength of the rockets coming in every other ball ! Broken from the beggining in each set – 0 to 5 in the first and 2 to 9 in the next two sets – the french never even got the german coach worried. |

| Favorite of the competition, Italy left a great feeling by dominating without loosing a set the spanish team. The italians, who started the game at top speed, failed all the same to be perfect. A loss of concentration in the second set enabled Spain to lead 18 to 13. But they closed ranks and rallyed to take the set. After this small scare, the italians were probably trying to impress their next opponents and through their best volleyball to explode the spanish opposition. Spain simply couldn’t resist such an opposition. Well, so long as the opposition was concentrated on it’s game… |

Netherlands - Germany 0-3

| Who will resist the powerful german team ? After the exhibition offered to the delighted audience against the Netherlands, torn apart in three suick sets, the question is worth putting forward. The dutch, who made an excellent impression the day before against Sweden, didn’t resist much against Germany. Nearly sure to reach the semi-finales in case of – probable – victory over France tomorrow, did they hide their game ? Maybe. Nevertherless, they didn’t find the solutions against the germans, unable to take the game to their account and Germany cam out on top at every moment, in particular thanks to their impressive serve. The score board tells you more than any more comments… |

| The wonderful cycling ring of la Queue d’Arve sent good vibrations this evening for a great fight between Italy and Belgium, very tight and quite a show ! Favorites, the italians only managed to gain the two points at the end of five tight sets, after being lead 2 sets to 1 by a belgian team that bore no complexes, were fearless and spinking all over the field. But the italians kept their momentum and waited until the belgians, breathless, handed over the game in the last two sets. A bitter end for a team that showed many qualities, but just couldn’t keep up the rythmn until the end of the game. The italians were shaken, rattled and rolled, but resisted to the end and finally brought through their basical qualities to round up the match.

Sweden - France 3-1

The swedish team brought some fresh air to Geneva Tuesday beating France 3 sets to 1. An unexpected success, even though in view of the rather low key playing against Germany one day earlier, the french team doesn’t seem at it’s best, and it also shows the progress of a country traditionally considered as one of the weakest of the competition. Playing on his six best players, when the french coach used nearly all his rooster, the swedish team overcame the french physically. The french girls tried to correct their problems at the net by outwitting their opponents, but without success. With two lost matches, Estelle Portasseau from Sète, the best french player on the field and her partners are out of the race to the semi-finals. |

| For the opening game of the 8 nations tournament, the Netherlands put in an first win over Sweden, beaten 3 sets to none in 85 minutes. Despite their much taller and stronger side, the dutch nevertheless had to fight hard during the two first two sets to topple courageous and motivated scandinavian players, uncorrectly said to be the weakest team of the competition. With enthusiasm and courage, energy and speed, the much smaller swedes held out for a time. But the trio Sloetjes – Hollink – de Kruijff, all over the 190 cm mark, were queens of the net… and that was the difference.

Welcome in Geneva!
In the recent history of swiss volleyball, Geneva has not often had the opportunity to greet national teams. Our country unfortunately doesn’t play a major part on the international scene and when it does, the lakeshore city has not often put itself forward to welcome events – and that is quite untraditional !
Welcoming year after year many international conferences, congresses and events, Geneva has built up in the past decades a strong network of friends all over the world – people that were welcomed in our little city and now endeavour to pass on our genuine warmess and hospitality.
So it was about time that international volleyball should drop in too. The Organizing Committee (CO) and it’s chairman Mr. André Hediger, City Councellor (Mayor), are very pleased and proud to welcome the 8 Nations Tournament 2006 in Geneva. We are sure you will enjoy your stay in our City and hope you will take home with you a small part of the „Spirit of Geneva“.
